ASEAN Industry 4.0 Based on Innovation and Digitalization

Many of the ASEAN countries are aspiring to escape from the “middle income trap” and achieve sustainable economic growth through digital infrastructure and innovation, which has resulted in increased significance of digital infrastructure and innovation. Nowadays, major global manufacturing companies are extensively relying on ASEAN countries’ low labor costs, making themselves vulnerable to environmental changes such as the 4th Industrial Revolution.

Through this seminar, we aim to increase the awareness of the smartization of the manufacturing industry and invite the international community to review and resolve various policy issues in cooperation. This seminar will also present the current status of Korea's 4th industrial revolution and discuss the potential of Korea for partnerships in the process of industrial upgrading in developing countries.

Date/Location: 4 May 2020, 13:30-15:00 / Seminar Room 107-109

Host: Korean Institute for Industrial Research

Topics for discussion

    - Current status and prospect of smart manufacturing industry
    - Challenges of smart factories and relevant policies
    - International cooperation to support industrial innovation in developing countries

Accelerating Sustainable Energy for Developing Countries through Energy 4.0: Opportunities and Challenges

On the back of rapid economic growth and increased energy consumption, developing countries in Asia face energy efficiency concerns and climate change threats. About 400 million people in the region still do not have access to power services, exacerbating Asia's energy poverty. This seminar will discuss the challenges of and measures that should be taken in solving the region's energy problems, taking into account the possible roles of public sector, private sector, and the international community, as well as the part that advanced technologies and innovations will play. It will also look into the potential presented by cooperation between the Republic of Korea and Asia's developing countries, using the former's outstanding digital convergence technologies to build sustainable energy systems in the region.

Date/Location: 4 May 2020, 15:00-16:30 / Seminar Room 107-109

Host: Korea Energy Economics Institute

Topics for discussion

    - Expected role, applicability and opportunity of the 4th industrial revolution technology to build sustainable energy systems in developing countries
    - Developing countries’ best practices and challenges of Energy 4.0
    - International cooperation and challenges to implement Energy 4.0
    - Measures to increase cooperation between ASEAN and Korea

Financial Sector Development for Sustainable Future in Asia

In the midst of slowing growth in developed countries and the People's Republic of China, the ASEAN’s economic growth rate is expected to catch up to that of the People's Republic of China in 2021. Many countries—except for Singapore, Thailand, and Malaysia—are below the IMF Financial Development Index average for emerging economies. In other words, the overall condition of financial institutions and markets throughout Asia is considered underdeveloped. The government's role has been limited due to the deterioration of fiscal soundness, and the ability of individuals and companies to access financial services is very low, constraining each country’s economic development. This seminar will discuss financial systems and infrastructure in Asian countries for their sustainable development.

Date/Location: 4 May 2020 16:30-18:00 / Seminar Room 107-109

Host: Korea Institute for International Economic Policy

Topics for discussion

    - The importance of financial market for sustainable development
    - Development of financial system in Asia (industry, market and infrastructure)
    - Policy development and direction of financial system for countries in the region
    - International cooperation for development of regional financial system
    - Financial cooperation between countries in Asia and Korea
